Welcome to One of the World’s Most Populated Deserts
When you think of a desert, you probably picture endless sand dunes, scorching heat, and landscapes where few people choose to live.
India’s Thar Desert couldn’t be more different.
Stretching across the state of Rajasthan, the Thar is home to more than 16 million people, making it one of the world’s most populated deserts. Instead of empty wilderness, you’ll find ancient cities, traditional villages, bustling markets, and communities that have called this harsh landscape home for centuries.
So how is that possible?
Unlike many of the world’s great deserts, the Thar receives seasonal monsoon rain. While water remains precious, generations of local communities have learned how to collect and conserve every drop through stepwells, underground reservoirs, and traditional rainwater harvesting systems. Over time, these ingenious methods allowed permanent settlements to flourish where many would expect only sand.
Where Do People Live?
People don’t live scattered across the dunes. They live in historic cities like Jaisalmer, known as the “Golden City,” where sandstone buildings naturally stay cooler in the summer heat. Across the desert, villages are filled with circular mud homes that help keep families cool during the day and warm during chilly desert nights.
Life in One of the World’s Harshest Deserts
Life here has always been shaped by resilience. Farmers grow hardy crops such as millet and mustard that can survive dry conditions, while camels, goats, and sheep remain an important part of daily life. Long before modern roads, camel caravans crossed these sands carrying spices, textiles, and precious goods, turning Rajasthan into an important trading region between India and Central Asia.
The climate is undeniably challenging. Summer temperatures often rise above 45°C (113°F), and rainfall can vary dramatically from year to year. Yet the people of the Thar have never tried to conquer the desert—they’ve learned to live with it. That relationship can be seen everywhere, from architecture designed to stay cool naturally to colourful clothing that brightens the golden landscape and folk music that continues to echo across the dunes after sunset.
